How it Works The lamp operates on a principle known as UV fluorescence: 1. Excitation: The lamp pulses high-intensity UV light (usually at a wavelength of around 214 nm) into a sampling chamber. 2. Absorption: If SO₂ molecules from the air are present in the chamber, they absorb this specific wavelength and become "excited". 3. Fluorescence: As those SO₂ molecules cool down and return to their normal energy state, they emit a new UV light at a longer wavelength (around 330–390 nm). 4. Measurement: A detector measures the brightness of this emitted light. The brighter the light, the higher the concentration of sulfur dioxide in the air.
