ZENITH - 49-1267-02 – Vintage Space Commander Ultrasonic Receiver Transducer, New In the early 1960s, solid-state circuitry (i.e., transistors) began to replace vacuum tubes. Handheld, battery-powered control units could now be designed to generate the inaudible sound electronically. Ultrasonic remote control lasted through the early 1980s or a quarter century from its inception. More than 9 million ultrasonic remote control TVs were sold by the industry during the 25-year reign of this Zenith innovation. By the early 1980s, the industry moved to infrared, or IR, remote technology. How did the zenith space command remote or old clicker remote work? In 1956, Robert Adler developed Zenith Space Command, a wireless remote. It was mechanical and used ultrasound to change the channel and volume. When the user pushed a button on the remote control, it struck a bar and clicked, hence they were commonly called "clickers", and the mechanics were similar to a pluck. These ultrasonic sounds were picked up by the TV to perform basic functions like changing channels or adjusting volume. It was one of the earliest remote control systems and worked mechanically, producing distinct sounds for each command For 25 years we did not need batteries for TV remote. And we didn't even have to point them at the television. That's because they used sound and was an ingenious invention. The Zenith Space Command ultrasonic transducer in the TV is a small, specialized microphone designed to detect high-frequency sound waves. It is usually positioned on the front of the television, often behind a small perforated metal grille or small hole, allowing it to "hear" the clicks from the aluminum rod-based remote. • Appearance: It appears as a small, silver-colored, or metallic, cylindrical microphone capsule. • Function: It serves as the receiver for the ultrasonic signals (around 40 kHz) produced by the mechanical rods in the remote. • Location: Located on the front of the TV set, near the screen or behind a decorative metal mesh. • Mechanism: When the remote's spring-loaded hammer strikes the internal aluminum rod, the transducer detects the resulting vibration, activating the TV's circuitry.
